In the 1970s, Maurice mainly offered copy models of Martin guitars, but in the 1990s, many originally designed models were added to the lineup. I remember a staff member of Moridaira Gakki, the distributor, saying at the time, "We need to make good Japanese-made guitars again.
This model is a product of that era. This model has a spruce veneer top, rosewood plywood sides, rosewood veneer back, mahogany neck, and rosewood bridge and fingerboard. The model is a dreadnought type that has been used since the Martin copy era.
There are some dents, scratches, peeling paint, and fogging of metal parts, as well as some minor lifting of the paint film on the back of the head. A tortoiseshell pickguard has been added on top of the original clear pickguard. A strap pin has been retrofitted to the heel of the neck. The nut and saddle may have been replaced.
The neck is in good condition, and the truss rod has been checked to 60 degrees left and right. The frets have been rubbed together and are approximately 70% high.
The tone is somewhat mellow. The tone is somewhat mellow, and it is more suited for fingerpicking than cutting. The price is very reasonable for a Japanese-made instrument.

「鳴ります！日本製モーリス！」

1970年代はマーティンのコピー・モデルを中心に展開していたモーリスですが、1990年代にはオリジナル・デザインのモデルが多くラインナップされるようになりました。販売元モリダイラ楽器のスタッフが、当時「日本製の良いギターをもう一度作らないとね」とおっしゃっていたのを記憶しています。
当モデルはその時代の製品。トップにスプルース単板、サイドにローズウッド合板、バックにローズウッド単板、ネックにマホガニー、ブリッジと指板にローズウッドを採用したモデルで、マーティン・コピー時代から手慣れているであろうドレッドノート・タイプながら随所にモーリス独自のデザインが採用されています。
打痕、引っ掻き傷、塗膜の剥げ、金属部品の曇りが散見され、ヘッド裏の塗膜には細かな浮きも確認できます。元々透明なピックガードが付けられていますが、その上にべっ甲柄のピックガードが重ねられています。またネック・ヒールにストラップ・ピンが後付されています。ナット、サドルは交換されている可能性があります。
ネックの状態は適正で、トラス・ロッドは左右60度まで動作確認済です。フレットは擦り合わせ済で、高さは7割前後となっています。
使用感相応に育っており鳴ってくれます。トーンは幾分まろやかで、どちらかと言うとカッティングより指弾きに向いた一本。日本製ながらお求めやすい点も魅力です。
